Dear Zachary,

I love you so much, baby. You are the most wonderful baby in the world. I am so proud to have you as my son. You are only six and a half weeks old, but you have grown so much in just this little time, that I know our future is full of happy times and wonderful memories.

Your father and I love you very dearly and though we have a strange sort of relationship, no matter what, we will always be there for you and will always love each other because we are your parents and care so much about you that it bonds us for life. For the many reasons that Daddy and I are not together as a married couple, I want you to always understand and know this for sure, none of those reasons are your fault. You are what drives us to be better people, the best parents, and have a better outlook on life. Your existence makes us whole. I will tell you this throughout your life so that when you read this letter, it will not be the first time that you have heard it. You are my angel.

I love to watch you when you sleep because you look so peaceful. You are at an age where you know no sorrow, no worries, and you are completely innocent taking in the world and having a perfect faith that we all should have, but sometimes lose along the road of life. I wish for you to always stay this way, but I know that that cannot be.

I know there will be times in your life when you will fall, when some kind of pain will find its way into your heart, and when you will start to doubt everyone including yourself. With this knowledge, I also know that I have to teach you the right lessons in life, have to teach you how to have confidence in yourself and give you all the moral foundation that you will need in order to deal with these situations. Never fear that you are alone. You never will be. You have me, you have your father, and you have angels sent from Heaven to watch over you all the time.

There is also one very important person that you have in your life to count on and that is yourself. Always be true to yourself. Never be selfish and don’t ever take anyone else’s feelings for granted or purposefully hurt someone, but always stay strong and true to what you believe in. If you can look in the mirror and like who you see, love who you see, you will be the richest person in the world. You are the most special child in the world and I love you. I pray for you to have a rich life, full of family, friends, love, dreams that come true and everlasting hope. Hope is one thing that can never be taken away and it gives you so much in return. You can carry it in your heart and pull it out whenever you want to, whether it be for a rainy day or one full of sunshine, whether you use the hope for yourself or for others...always hope.

Always remember that you are loved. There is nothing you could say or do that would make my love or Daddy’s love for you any less. It grows every day even though I think my heart is so full of love for you that it couldn’t get any bigger, every moment you’re alive it adds to the love. Please remember also, that you can share anything with us that you want to. We will always listen and will always have advice to guide you with and we will try to always support you even if it’s not something that we agree with.

I sang this song to you when I was pregnant with you and I’ve sung it to you at least once a day since you came home from the hospital. It epitomizes everything I hope and want for you in your life. I love you my darling son, always keep that in your heart.

    Love,
        Mommy

I Hope You Dance
(performed by Lee Ann Womack)

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed.

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
and when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance, I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin'
Loving might be a mistake, but it's worth makin'
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
If you come close to sellin' out, reconsider
Give the Heavens above more than just a passing glance
and if you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance, I hope you dance.
